Laparoscopy is performed by making a small 0.5cm to 1 cm incision in the abdomen and introducing a laparoscope through it with a fibre-optic cable connected to a LED light source. This helps the surgeon to visualise the internal organs while performing complex surgeries, without a laparotomy (which involves cutting of all layers of abdomen).
